Cardiovascular health: how to fight against the leading cause of death in Spain
Pollution 30% of deaths from cardiovascular disease are due to an environmental component
Hotter-than-usual summer nights lead to an increase in deaths from cardiovascular causes among men in their sixties, although not among women, according to a study published Monday by the
BMJ Open
publication .
Researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, examined the possible links between high nighttime temperatures during the summer and an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease among adults aged 60 to 69 years.
The scientists, using data from the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS), found that
a 1 degree Celsius rise in
temperature on a typical summer night was associated with
a 3.1% increased risk of death. cardiovascular disease
among
men aged 60 to 64 years
.
This increase, however, was not registered neither among the older men (65 to 69) nor among the women of the entire cohort.
Previous studies on the effect of heat waves had focused on their deadly potential, but had not taken into account age or gender factors.
The researchers analyzed ONS data on deaths attributed to cardiovascular causes in June and July between 2001 and 2015 in England and Wales, where heat waves tend to be more common in those months.
They also evaluated information from King County, Washington (USA), which has similar environmental conditions, although in this case only figures corresponding to males were studied.
In this county, scientists found that
an increase of 1 degree increased mortality by 4.8% among those under 65
, but not among the elderly.
Over the 15 years observed, cardiovascular death rates decreased substantially, which corresponds to a greater use of primary and secondary therapies in the general population.
Despite this, the authors emphasize that the risk of death from these causes remains high, even more so due to the increasingly hot nights in summer.
"The present findings should stimulate similar investigations ... in other mid- and high-latitude regions. Considering the increasing likelihood of extreme summers in the western United States and the United Kingdom, our results encourage (taking) preventive initiatives and
new urban policies,
" the authors said in a statement.
