Yesterday, the Ministry of Culture and Youth announced the launch of the "Reading Month 2022", under the slogan "The Emirates Reads", embodying the national vision, which aims to prepare a generation of readers, consolidating the country's position as the capital of content, culture and knowledge.

The UAE celebrates the month of reading annually, in implementation of the decision of the Council of Ministers, which designated March of each year as a national month for reading, and is a milestone step that establishes a new stage in building knowledge societies in the country, and the Ministry of Culture and Youth is working to implement it, in full coordination with the relevant federal and local authorities.

The month of reading reflects the keenness of the UAE leadership, headed by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate a culture of science and knowledge, and to complete a series of cultural projects. The intellectual and cognitive launched by the state since its inception.

One of the most important national goals of this initiative is for reading to become a well-established behavior for 50% of Emirati adults by 2026 and 80% of school students, and for students to read an average of 20 books annually on an optional basis. The strategy also aims that the percentage of Emirati parents who read should not be less for their children about 50%.

Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, said: "Reading is closely linked to the efforts of the UAE to consolidate the knowledge economy as a basis for entering into the future and maintaining the country's progress and the well-being of its citizens. Leading the sustainable development process, consolidating the culture of reading in society, and making initiatives aimed at raising the level of knowledge and culture a major priority in the annual agenda of government and private agencies.

She stressed that the month of reading is not an occasion linked to a specific time period, but rather a permanent celebration of one of the most important habits on which societies must be based. In addition, it contributes to a person’s ability to absorb the rapid changes in our time, and affects his choices and the preservation of his identity.

It is noteworthy that the month of reading is an annual occasion in which various government and private institutions, educational and cultural institutions participate, through initiatives and programs that contribute to building a reading community, armed with science and knowledge, capable of leading the development process, as reading is an important tool for maintaining mental and mental health.

His Highness the President of the State issued the National Law of Reading, the first of its kind in the world, with the aim of supporting the development of human capital, contributing to building mental and cognitive capabilities, supporting national intellectual production, and building knowledge societies in the country.

The National Reading Law sets binding frameworks for all government agencies in the educational, community, media and cultural sectors to consolidate reading among all segments of society at all ages.
