Fewer outings, more mistrust… Since the Covid-19, the daily life of the French has been somewhat turned upside down.

This Friday, a study by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) reveals that the health crisis has led to a drop in satisfaction among citizens.

Assessed on a scale of 0 - "not at all satisfied" - to 10 - "completely satisfied" -, satisfaction in life makes it possible to measure "the subjective well-being of people", explains INSEE

The survey for 2021, the latest available, shows that after a year of the pandemic, people aged 16 or over residing in mainland France gave their lives an average rating of 6.8 out of 10, the lowest since INSEE has been measuring it since 2010. Until then, the level of satisfaction fluctuated between 7.1 and 7.5 depending on the year.

It was 7.3 in 2019 and 7.2 in 2020 (measured mainly before the first confinement), specifies the institute.

The sharp drop, linked to “lifestyle changes” and “anxiety” due to the pandemic, was felt “at all ages and in all social categories”, continues INSEE.

Financial difficulties

At the same time, the constraints on paid social activities due to the health crisis reduced deprivation: 10.9% of people were "poor in living conditions", according to the European indicator of material and social deprivation, against 13.1% in 2019 and 2020.

But this decline in deprivation "is explained more by the impossibility of being able to participate in activities than by an effective reduction in financial difficulties", underlines INSEE.

The indicator is based on measuring the consequences of low income: “deprivation, inability to acquire or consume certain goods or participate in certain social or leisure activities”.
