In January, 260 people lost their lives on the roads of mainland France.

A stable figure compared to the same month in 2020, before the country was hit by the Covid-19 epidemic.

On the other hand, it is up 44% compared to January 2021, but which remains an “atypical month marked by travel restrictions, in particular linked to the curfew”, tempers Road Safety which published its statistics on Tuesday.

The month of January 2022 is marked “by the resumption of French mobility”, with travel “10% higher on average compared to January 2021”, according to Road Safety, which quotes Cerema (Center for Studies and of expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and planning).

High pedestrian mortality

Pedestrian mortality is also "one of the highest for the month of January over the past 10 years", with 57 people dead.

The number of bodily accidents (3,728) fell by 18.6% in January compared to 2020 and that of injuries (4,623) by 27.7%.

On the other hand, in the overseas territories, the number of people who died on the roads jumped by 50%, with 24 deaths compared to 16 in 2020.
