Once the oyster capital of the world, New York has seen its shellfish population decline over the centuries.

The local organization “Billion Oyster Project” has therefore set itself the task of building reefs likely to allow oysters to reinvest the New York coastline.

“An ecological and protective colonization”

"These oysters are like our coral reefs," explains Tanasia Swift, who coordinates the operation.

They do not move, but they do a lot for our ports!

".

Oyster reefs are indeed essential for healthy coastlines.

Because once mature, oysters filter polluted water and attract marine life.

"They can even protect the city from flooding because their presence creates a natural barrier between the port and the land: if a big wave comes, the reef slows it down and makes it much less destructive," says Tanasia Swift.
