She searched her "spam" email for an old message... to discover a surprise that changed her life

A strange coincidence led an American woman to discover that she had won a $3 million lottery, by searching an email for an old message in her spam folder.

The contest organizer said last Friday that the woman, Laura Spears, 55, of Oakland County, matched five balls in the Michigan Mega Millions lottery on New Year's Eve, but did not consider checking her numbers, or Check her spam, according to CBS Pittsburgh and Sputnik.

The women's victory is exceptional, especially since the "spam" folder is usually spread with false messages.

Laura Spears confirmed that she discovered the message by accident while searching for a missing email from someone, so she checked the "spam" folder in her email account.

She added that she did not believe what she read in the spam, so she logged into her lottery account to make sure, and that it was still very shocking to her.

Spears indicated that she added the Michigan lottery to her list of safe senders, in case she was lucky to win again.

She plans to share the $3 million with her family, and retire earlier than planned.
