After it became known that the Swedish Academy's dictionary (SAOB) is under threat, votes have been raised for the state to go in and finance the project.

The cost of SAOB is estimated at SEK 17 million per year.

The Swedish Academy's permanent secretary Mats Malm has previously expressed that he is happy to receive help from the Ministry of Culture.

"Asked for a meeting"

Minister of Culture Jeanette Gustafsdotter (S) replied on Thursday that she could not take a position on the issue because the Academy had not heard from her.

But now it's starting to move.

"We have contacted the Ministry of Culture to talk about the issue.

We have asked for a meeting ", writes Mats Malm to Kulturnyheterna.

When the meeting will be held is not yet known.

Dialogue with ISOF

Malm also writes that he had conversations with the Institute for Language and Folk Memories about the future of the dictionary.

The agency's director general Martin Sundin has previously opened up for SAOB to be able to continue with state funds.

“In light of the debate that has arisen about the future of SAOB, we see it as important to discuss the role of the state in a long-term and stable financing of a linguistic infrastructure for the Swedish language.

The development of language and access to language is our common responsibility ", writes Martin Sundin in a statement together with the Language Council.

The Cultural News is looking for Minister of Culture Jeanette Gustafsdotter.
