Children with asthma are hospitalized more frequently than others as a result of a Covid-19 infection, according to a study conducted in Scotland and published on Tuesday.

But these cases remain infrequent and deaths are extremely rare.

"It has been found that children with asthma are at a higher risk of hospitalization for Covid-19 (...) than those without asthma", according to the study conducted using Scottish public health data and published in the

Lancet Respiratory Medicine

.

The authors measured, retrospectively, the proportion of hospitalizations following coronavirus infection among 5-17 year olds who have been diagnosed with asthma in the past.

They compared it with the frequency of these hospitalizations in non-asthmatics.

Priority for vaccination?

Scottish children with asthma have been admitted to hospital more often to treat Covid.

The difference is even more marked when we take into account only the most severe asthmatics, that is to say who had been the subject of a previous hospitalization or had received treatment on several occasions.

According to the authors, these data argue for making children with asthma a priority for vaccination if it opens to children under 12 years of age.

This is not the case in the United Kingdom, but it is, for example, already in place in the United States for the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine which has also just been approved for children by the Union health authorities. European (EU).

Very few hospitalizations and deaths

However, hospitalizations remain rare even among children with asthma - 1.5% of those infected - and deaths are so infrequent that no statistical conclusions could be drawn from the study.

“Even if children with asthma appear to be more at risk of being hospitalized, (this) risk remains very low,” underlines, in the same review, the pediatrician Rachel Harwood who did not participate in the study.

"Before considering vaccination, we must carefully study the balance between the risk of hospitalization for Covid-19 and the low risk linked to the side effects of the vaccine," she concludes.
