During the nights of October 29 and 30, a sheep farm located in La Verdière (Var) was decimated by two suspected wolf attacks, reports

Var-Matin

.

A total of 26 animals died, eight were injured and 17 are missing.

"We have been back for barely three weeks and we are already losing 30 animals in two days," breeder Guillaume Menut said bitterly to our colleagues.

His herd had indeed been relatively preserved during the last three months spent in the Mercantour massif.

According to the operator, the number of wolves in the region would thus be greatly underestimated.

"If we admitted that their number is much higher, the wolf could be downgraded and would no longer be considered threatened," he explained.

Killing a wolf without authorization from the prefecture is in fact always punishable by a fine.

Fear of further attacks

Asked by France 3 PACA, Hervé Boyac, representative of the FERUS association, specifies: “We often shoot wolves unduly, that is to say that we have not used all the protective measures that we have. could use ”.

But the shepherd of La Verdière feels all the more powerless because he had taken precautions.

Dogs and electric fences were unable to contain the attacks, however.

After the passage of the French Biodiversity Office, the breeder should be compensated for each animal killed or injured.

The man fears, however, new attacks in winter, 250 animals having been killed last year between December and February.
