In a major fight in Düsseldorf's old town, a 19-year-old was critically injured on Saturday night. After initial investigations, the young man was attacked with a glass bottle by an as yet unknown perpetrator, the police said on Saturday. He was so badly injured that he had to undergo emergency surgery that night. His life was temporarily in acute danger. He is now stable, said a police spokesman on Saturday. A homicide squad is investigating suspicion of an attempted homicide.

"We are still at the very beginning with our investigations," the police spokesman continued.

According to the information, witnesses had observed a fight between two groups in the Burgplatz at around 1:45 a.m. and had also become aware of the injured young man lying on the ground.

The perpetrator fled in an unknown direction.

How many people were involved in the brawl is still under investigation, the spokesman said.

"In any case, we are currently not assuming that it was a tumult, but rather a dispute between two groups with several people," said the spokesman.

It was also initially unclear what the dispute was about.

This is one of the reasons why the police looked for other witnesses or people on Saturday who could give clues about the suspect.

Most recently, riots by young people and attacks on police officers in Düsseldorf's old town made headlines in the summer.
