Wole Soyinka, Naguib Mahfouz, Nadine Gordimer and John Maxwell Coetzee have, in a way, paved the way for the Tanzanian Abdulrazak Gurnah, who was awarded the prize in 2021. Since 1901, out of the 118 laureates of the most prestigious literary distinction, 95 are from Europe or North America.
