• Geology Why is it so difficult to predict an earthquake?

A man died this Monday in the collapse of a church caused by the 5.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that struck the Greek island of Crete this morning, according to Civil Protection.

The fire service confirmed to Efe that the man was trapped under the ruins of the roof of a small church in the town of Arkalojori, where he was carrying out restoration work when the earthquake caused the dome of the temple to fall.

When he could be pulled out of the collapse he was unconscious.

Civil Protection also confirmed nine injured by this earthquake that has collapsed buildings and electricity poles, has blocked roads and has caused panic on the largest island of Greece.

Three other people who were trapped could be rescued or made their own way out.

The Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory reported today that the earthquake, with a focal depth of 10.4 kilometers, occurred at 09.17 local time (06.17 GMT).

A 15 second earthquake

Its epicenter was located on the same island, 24 kilometers northwest of the coastal town of Árvi and 346 kilometers southeast of Athens.

The strong shaking, which lasted about 15 seconds, was also felt in the Cretan capital, Heraklion, where residents took to the streets for fear of aftershocks, as well as on the tourist island of Santorini.

A few minutes later the first of ten aftershocks was felt, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, followed by another of 4.5.

All educational centers and public buildings in the Heraklion region have been evacuated and have so far been closed.

The Greek Minister of Climate Emergency and Civil Protection, Jristos Stylianidis, traveled to the island to monitor the situation, launched the immediate response plan to earthquake emergencies and sent a C130 Hercules aircraft with a Special Disaster Unit (EMAK) for rescue work EFE
