• The firefighters expect a decisive day in their fight against the fire in the Var, as the weather conditions improve.

  • But resumptions of fire are taking place in the northern sector of the disaster, while more than 1,000 firefighters continue to fight against the flames.

Firefighters continue to fight relentlessly against the gigantic fire that has ravaged the Var department since Monday evening.

Thursday is a “decisive” day, with favorable weather conditions, but the risk of recoveries is still very important.

All the forests of the Var are still at risk of very severe fire and their access is strictly prohibited.

Resumptions of fire

While the prefecture was communicating on "a slowdown in the fire" during the night, resumptions of fire finally took place at the beginning of the afternoon in the plain of the Moors.

"Plumes of smoke are heading towards Le Luc and Pierrefeu," warns the prefect of Var on Twitter.

Since late Monday afternoon, the fire has covered 8,100 ha.

The south of the disaster seems contained and the efforts of the firefighters are now concentrated further north-east, towards Le Cannet-des-Maures, Le Plan de la Tour and Vidauban.

The edges of the fire represent 80 km in length, that is to say as much distance to deal with, and to monitor.

Still more than 1,000 firefighters mobilized

Between 1,100 and 1,200 firefighters are still on the ground fighting the worst fire since the start of the summer.

"Reinforcements have arrived from the West and North regions to reinforce the barracks, arm the machines and allow the SDIS 83 teams to continue their fight on the ground", indicates the prefecture of Var.

A total of 789 drops were carried out by air means on Wednesday alone.

This Thursday, two Canadairs, two helicopters water bombers, a Puma and the Dragon 83 are on site, joined by a Dash in the afternoon to establish retardant barriers.

An unchanged balance sheet

Fortunately, the death toll linked to this fire has not changed since Wednesday, there are still two deaths found in a house near Grimaud.

19 people were slightly intoxicated, and seven firefighters slightly injured.

7,500 people are still evacuated from their place of residence, and 8 campsites have been evacuated.

Vacationers from the Pacha Caïd campsite were able to reach their vacation spot, i.e. 2,000 people in 520 cars escorted by the gendarmes.

All other people must stay in the rooms made available to them by the municipalities.
