On August 2, the incidence rate in the department reached 418 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double compared to the beginning of July.
"The epidemic is experiencing a significant rebound, particularly on the Basque Coast where the arrival of summer visitors, the mixing of the population and the relaxation of certain behaviors while the Delta variant is particularly contagious, have led to a rapid increase in the rate of incidence ”, thus indicates the ARS in a press release.
Eleven patients in intensive care
The Center hospitalier de la Côte Basque, located in Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, is directly affected by this rebound.
“The number of hospitalizations is increasing every week and the intensive care unit is currently taking care of eleven Covid-19 patients (eight men and three women, including one pregnant) whose average age is only 54 years.
Among these patients, ten are not vaccinated, the vaccinated person is 78 years old.
They are all residents of the Basque Country, there are no tourists among them.

In this context, the director of the Center hospitalier de la Côte basque, decided, in agreement with the head doctor of the Samu and the health authorities, to trigger the White Plan "in order to be able to face this exceptional situation".
