  • Opening. The largest rooftop pool in Madrid where Ava Gardner used to bathe

From the bank that was once kept several counters, those spectacular golden boxes with a crank on one side where the money was jealously kept and above all "that

curious interior hole

installed at the top from where it was watched that no employee put his hand where it should not ". It is recounted by the German

Sven Rasch

, general manager of the hotel in question, the Cort de Palma de Mallorca, built in the

centuries

-

old facilities

of the now-defunct Banco Atlántico.

Located in the square with the same name (Plaça de Cort), right next to the 17th century building that houses the

City Hall

of the Balearic capital, this designer boutique hotel is the perfect

base of operations

for exploring the city.

It is close to everything: the cathedral, the Plaza Mayor,

the Borne

(or the golden mile) to go shopping, restaurants of all kinds and nationalities,

creative

confectioneries such

as the one in Fornet de la Soca ...

Facade and terrace of the hotel, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

From the time of the bank, it preserves not only some

counters

(starting with the one at the current reception) and boxes, but also the sandstone balconies, the star-

shaped ironwork

, the very high wooden ceilings, the stone moldings in the windows ... They are mixed with contemporary works of art by artists such as

Toni Garau,

who creates, among other things, pieces inspired by the looms so characteristic of the

textile industry

in his town, Sóller, in the north of Mallorca.

Island-inspired interior design

Architects

Vicente Alcover and Luis Montana

were in charge of the transition from a traditional bank to a hotel

, who insisted on maintaining the building's centennial (and so elegant) atmosphere. The designer

Lázaro Rosa-Violán

accompanied them in the interior design task

, who wanted to create "a warm and relaxed atmosphere", as he himself indicates, both in the

common rooms

and in the 16 suites with their own character. "We created different

mood boards

(panel of ideas) for them in order to further enhance the differences that morphologically they already had. We wanted to create in the client's

memory

a

memory of well-being

and warmth once they have visited the hotel" continues Rosa-Violán.

The roof terrace with solarium and jacuzzi.

The protagonists of the suites are materials such as leather,

marble in the bathrooms

finished off with white and blue tiles and linen.

None are the same, although they all have a

private wine bar,

pillow menu, satellite TV, 2x2 meter bed,

Egyptian cotton

towels and bathrobes

from the Frette brand,

Molton Brown

amenities

and a Bose bluetooth speaker.

Inside of a boat

The

Plaza suite,

for example, simulates the interior of a

ship moored

in the Mediterranean with its turquoise and petrol blues, its framed maps, its wooden planks or its Scandinavian maritime history books.

The

Junior Suite Plaza,

for its part, bets on the green pine of the interior of Mallorca, since the island is the main inspiration, while the Private Terrace of the attic surprises with its

terracotta tones

and, of course, its terrace (hence the name) of 13 square meters.

Lounge of the Raw & Grill Brasserie.

Of course, the pretty girl is

La Isla,

a two-story loft with two bedrooms, a living room with a fireplace and a terrace.

Once you have chosen the suite, you have to

go up to the roof

to enjoy the panoramic views over the city, the Jacuzzi and the

sun loungers in the solarium.

You also have to reserve a table at the

Raw & Grill The Brasserie restaurant

to try chef José Rodríguez's menu "based on fresh products, whether from the

sea, the land or the farm,

" explains this red-haired Mallorcan with a German look.

"Everybody tells me," he confesses with a laugh.

Between tartares and ceviches

Look out for the red tuna and venison tartares, the

corvina

and mango

ceviche

, the salmon with mushroom polenta, the zucchini carpaccio and the aubergine, red pepper, onion and roast potato roast.

And already put, to the

15 models of

hydraulic

mosaics

as rugs with geometric motifs that generate a visual effect that extends throughout the restaurant to the bathrooms.

The restaurant specializes in fresh produce.

The carefully selected fish, meat and vegetables are cooked on

the

restaurant's

charcoal grill

.

The diner can see them displayed in the display case next to the hotel terrace, next to the

centenary olive tree

in Plaça de Cort and perfect for serving a la carte breakfast or a gin and tonic in the late afternoon.

The decoration is dotted with

wine racks, mirrors and carpentry

that connect the different spaces with each other.

Rosa-Violán has wanted to maximize the height of the premises by creating on the ceilings grid surfaces of

perimeter mirrors

and central panels with false molded wood ceilings from which huge lamps of different designs hang.
