In an attempt to stem the explosion of Covid-19 cases, bars, restaurants, beach establishments and night-time grocery stores in the Pyrénées-Orientales will have to close at 11 p.m. from Sunday evening and until August 2, announced the prefecture, this Saturday.

The prefecture had already imposed, since Saturday, the wearing of masks in public spaces, except on the beach and large natural spaces as well as the ban on the consumption of alcoholic drinks in public spaces outside restaurants and bars.

Border department of Spain

This is the first department to adopt such measures this summer in metropolitan France.

President Emmanuel Macron announced this week that "braking measures" would be taken whenever a department exceeds the threshold of 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The prefecture recalls that the significant and rapid increase in cases of contamination by the Delta variant in this department bordering Spain and very touristy "is reflected by an incidence rate in strong and continuous growth".

In the space of a week, it went from 41.5 / 100,000 inhabitants to 258.8 / 100,000 inhabitants on July 16.

"This exponential progression is starting to translate into an equally growing number of hospitalizations", according to the prefecture.
