We will probably have to wait for the

African qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup to

resume, after a 21-month hiatus. While the first round was played in September 2019, the group stage was (finally) to start in June 2021. The first day was thus scheduled from June 5 to 8 and the second from June 11 to 14.

But the African Football Confederation (CAF) has decided to postpone it until September, rfi.fr learned from concordant sources.

They will therefore be held at a period during which the third and fourth days were to take place.

The latter are shifted to October and the fifth and sixth to November.

As for the dams, which will designate the five representatives of Africa in Qatar, they should then take place in March 2022, a few weeks after the next African Cup of Nations scheduled in Cameroon (January 9-February 6).

A stadium problem

The issue of postponement was discussed at a CAF Emergency Committee meeting held on May 3, 2021. This postponement should be addressed again at the next CAF Executive Committee meeting, scheduled for 15 May in Kigali.

It is linked to the condition of stadiums and lawns on the continent.

In recent months, CAF has carried out a large audit of the speakers.

According to a list, consulted by rfi.fr, about twenty affiliated federations would not have any stadium with international standards now required by CAF and FIFA.

Among these countries, not least: Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal.

Only Cameroon, Egypt (host of CAN 2019), Equatorial Guinea (organizer of CAN 2015), Morocco, Nigeria and of course South Africa (World Cup 2010) are doing well. , with four or more enclosures approved for official competitions.
