Florida police have started a homicide investigation after a three-year-old was fatally shot during his birthday party.

The boy named Elijah was allegedly hit by a misguided bullet in a suburb of Miami on Saturday evening when strangers opened fire with semi-automatic weapons in front of his house, the Miami-Dade police said on Tuesday.

The toddler was taken to the hospital, but died there from his serious injuries.

Elijah's family told local media that their son and another child celebrated his birthday on Saturday.

Accordingly, the boy should have turned four in a few days.

A video from the celebration showed children playing in a pool.

According to the police, a 21-year-old was shot injured in the incident.

In total, the police found more than 60 bullets at the scene.

"I am completely horrified, I am disgusted," said Police Chief Alfredo Ramirez III.

A reward of $ 15,000 was offered for clues leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.

Children in the United States are repeatedly victims of gun violence.

Critics blame the loose arms legislation for this.
