Documentary filmmaker Frédéric Brunnquell spent two months on board the “Joseph Roty II”, the largest French trawler.

He made a film from it that he has just adapted into a book.

“Hommes des tempêtes” was published by Editions Grasset.

Frédéric Brunnquell's

new novel

is a Homeric tale, tossed about by the waves and the blast of the wind, permeated by the spray and the odors of diesel fuel and dead fish.

A virile odyssey in which the strength of the arms is the same as that of words and images.

During two winter months in January and February, those of storms in the North Atlantic, documentary filmmaker Frédéric Brunnquell shared the daily life of the sailors of the “Joseph Roty II”, the largest French trawler, the last of the large ships to have taken men in Newfoundland.

A factory boat that transforms blue whiting into surimi paste in its belly.

He made a 52-minute film that tells the daily life of these true convicts of the sea, voluntary workers far from the land and their families, rather silent but bearers of an endearing humanity.

And after, the film, here comes the time of the book.

“Hommes des tempêtes”, by Frédéric Brunnquell, was published by Editions Grasset.
