  • Covid - How does Moderna's vaccine actually work?

The Council of Ministers has given the green light this Tuesday to the purchase of 17 million additional doses of the

coronavirus

vaccine

developed by Moderna, as reported at a press conference by the Government spokesperson, María Jesús Montero.

This acquisition is part of a new European Union negotiation process that aims to

expand the number of doses available

to advance the joint European vaccine strategy against Covid-19.

Specifically, Europe has bought

150 million doses of Moderna's vaccine

, which will be delivered to countries in the last two quarters of the year.

In addition, the agreement includes the possibility of opting for another 150 million additional doses.

Of the first 150 million doses,

Spain has 17 million

vaccines, of which 5.7 will arrive in the third quarter and 11.3 in the fourth quarter.

This is in addition to the 16 million doses that Spain has received after the purchase made by Europe last November.

"This purchase will allow the autonomous communities to

continue complying with the vaccination calendar

, something that is very important to combat the virus and return to normality," the Minister of Finance has added, to reiterate that the Government maintains the objective that in summer 70 percent of the population is vaccinated.

In Spain,

3,829,465 doses of the

Covid-19

vaccines

from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca

have been administered until Monday

, 84.9 percent of those distributed among the autonomous communities, which amounts to 4,508,845 units.

Finally, Montero has announced that the Council of Ministers has also approved the hiring, through the emergency procedure,

of the warehouse and distribution service

of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the amount of one million euros.

"This is an essential contracting so that the medicines can reach the distribution points with quality and efficiency," he asserted, to recall that the Government has invested almost 1,900 million euros in the different vaccines against Covid-19.

"We will continue acquiring the doses that are made available to us to meet the vaccination objectives that we have set for ourselves," he has settled.
