A "deterioration in the dynamics" of the wolf population in France has been observed by the CNRS and the OFB.

The note published last December 24 by the latter was relayed this Friday by the national association Ferus, which campaigns for the protection of bears, wolves and lynx in the country.

She also asks about the "sampling shots" carried out in France.

They were 530 at the end of winter 2018-2019 and 577 the year after, 2019-2020.

The gray wolf is a protected species but which can be killed "within a strict derogatory framework", in particular within the framework of the protection of the herds.

The study specifies that this management should be done solely with this objective, and not be part of a desire to control the workforce.

Ferus urges France to listen to the experts

She adds: "The number of attacks is not only linked to the number of wolves, but also depends on a multitude of biological, topographical, or even human factors".

In 2021, the maximum number of wolves that can be collected is set at 110. But this scenario assumes that "the population functions as before the strengthening of wolf collections, and would give a projection of around 700 wolves by 2020".

For Ferus, the French state must listen to its experts and act "with caution".

The association encourages it to bet "on means of protection, the only solution to reduce damage to herds".
