The audio streaming giant Spotify published in early December the ranking of the most listened to titles, artists, albums and podcasts on the platform this year.

To decipher these results, Europe 1 asked for explanations from Claire Hazan, the podcast manager at Spotify and Antoine Monin, the group's music director.

In France, the domination of artists from the French-speaking urban scene is confirmed.

Hatik, Maes, Gradur, Nekfeu, Nino, Jul, PNL, Dadju… These artists are all among the most popular of the year.

But Spotify music director Antoine Monin assured that things tend to evolve.

"We also see the arrival in the rankings of more traditional French artists such as Jean-Jacques Goldman, Johnny Hallyday, Michel Berger ... Initially, streaming was used by rather young users who are comfortable with digital tools and applications, but today we see that this is something that is spreading and democratizing. As more and more audiences come to favor streaming and offers like Spotify's , we see more people, all tastes are found there ", he explains.

The rise of podcasts

Michel Berger and Jean-Jacques Goldman, artists who are part of the big trend of this complicated year: nostalgia.

Audio has been a real refuge in 2020. And audio on Spotify is also podcasts, the consumption of which has soared.

"We can see that podcasts this year have accompanied Spotify users throughout this complicated period. Listening habits have probably changed because the way we have lived the last few months has changed. We have found that there was There was a sharp increase in the number of Spotify users who listened to podcasts. An increase of 117% for women and 76% for men, "said Claire Hazan, podcast manager at Spotify.

She explains that "there is a great diversity of formats among what has been listened to, which is very interesting.
