• LOC.Jeff Bridges announces that he suffers from lymphoma

Actor Jeff Bridges, the star of films like

The Big Lebowski,

has announced that he suffers from

cancer

, specifically a tumor called

lymphoma

.

"I have been diagnosed with

lymphoma.

Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate to have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good," Bridges posted on his Twitter account

Lymphoma is a broad term used to define a type of cancer that develops from a failure in the way

lymphocytes

(white blood cells that help fight infection) work.

This failure causes the creation of an abnormal cell that becomes cancerous.

Like all other lymphocytes, cancerous lymphocytes can grow in many parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, bone marrow, blood, some organs such as the spleen, etc.

The two main types of this cancer are

Hodgkin lymphoma

(which spreads in an orderly fashion from one group of lymph nodes to others) and

non-Hodgkin lymphoma

(which spreads through the lymphatic system in a disorderly way).

So far the causes that trigger the disease are unknown, although it has been associated with risk factors, such as certain infections (such as the Epstein-Barr virus) or having been exposed to ionizing radiation.

Symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, such as those in the

neck, armpits, or groin

.

Other symptoms include fever, night sweats, tiredness, and weight loss.

The incidence of this pathology is high, since every year 5,000 new cases are diagnosed in Spain in adults over 40 years of age.

Although the prognosis depends on the type of tumor and its aggressiveness, in general lymphoma is one of the tumors

with the most therapeutic options today

.

Hodgkin lymphoma is most common in people 15 to 35 and 50 to 70 years of age.

It represents 10% of lymphomas, has an estimated incidence of 2.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year and is the most common cancer in adolescents.

Thanks to currently available therapies, 80% of those affected overcome the disease.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma accounts for 90% of all lymphomas and ranks seventh on the list of most common cancers.

3% of cancer deaths are due to this type of tumor, although the mortality associated with this cancer has been decreasing in recent decades due to improved treatments.
