Pyrénées-Atlantiques: In its last video, L214 shows “the horror” in a breeding duck farm for the foie gras sector - 20 Minutes

Rotting duck corpses lying next to other living animals, injured animals, the ground covered in droppings, the presence of rats and maggots: these images were filmed by the L214 association in a breeding of male ducks used for reproduction in the foie gras sector, located in Lichos, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

The worst breeding since the start of L214

The photos and videos posted on the L214 site were taken at the beginning of August, after a "whistleblower" was reported. They depict "the worst breeding that we have had the opportunity to see since the beginnings of L214" fifteen years ago, said Sébastien Arsac, director of investigations of the association.

L214 denounces high health risks, “cruelty” towards animals and damage to the environment, because of the risks incurred by the Saison, a nearby watercourse, due to the excreta flowing from the building.

A complaint, in particular for cruelty to animals

The association calls for the closure of the farm "urgently". She hopes at least "a ban on carrying out a breeding activity" against those responsible. A complaint was filed Wednesday by the lawyer of L214 in the court of Pau for "cruelty to animals", "abandonment", and "damage to the environment".

After the scandal caused by the images of thousands of ducklings thrown alive in the trash on a farm in Dordogne, L214 will ask the Ministry of Agriculture "an audit of all breeding duck farms and hatcheries in the foie gras sector "

Notice of operation by the ministry

The Ministry of Agriculture, said in a statement that “from August 20 in the morning, a veterinarian will be on site to examine in detail the condition of the animals and take the necessary protective measures. The minister asked the prefecture for a formal notice of the operation, which could lead to a suspension of activity ”.

After learning of the existence of the video, the prefecture services which went to the site on Wednesday afternoon "were able to confirm some of the breaches of the regulations in force," the statement said.

Contacted by 20 Minutes before publication, the site manager said he wanted to review these images first before commenting on them. Also joined by 20 Minutes , the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of the Populations of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques announced that it would come back to us quickly but had not given an answer on August 20 at 8 am.
