Are some internet users going to skip Netflix? - Jaap Arriens / Sipa USA / SIPA

The film dates from 2017, but sometimes all it takes is a simple message on a social network to spark controversy. On Twitter, a user posted a short clip of Sheikh Jackson , an Egyptian feature film. The story of this film depicts the life of a very pious imam who sees his beliefs shattered the day he learns of the disappearance of his idol, namely Michael Jackson.

In one of the scenes, the King of Pop fan interrupts a man's prayer in a mosque by starting the choreography for “Thriller”. Then ensues a fight which is not to everyone's taste. According to some tweeters, the extract would be a "lack of respect" since it would aim to make fun of Islam.

"Our Islam is mocked"

Using the hashtag #BoycottNetflix, some users have therefore called to unite against the streaming platform by unsubscribing. “Our Islam is laughed at because we let it go. You have to move otherwise they will never stop, ”wrote one of them in particular.

Other Internet users, on the other hand, evoked a futile and unnecessary controversy, and tried to temper things. The film was not produced by Netflix, nor is it available in France. If the video giant did not take care to comment on the controversy, we can easily imagine that it will die out as quickly as it appeared.
