The Empress goes on tour (virtual). - Gabrielle Riouah

  • The Empress goes on a virtual world tour from July 13 to 27.
  • Limited to 1,000 seats maximum, each concert will be accessible thanks to geolocation.

A world tour in 2020? While live music is probably going through one of its worst years and its future is still very vague, the project is impossible. Between the ban on gathering in an enclosed space and the inability to travel to countless countries, it is unclear how artists can chain the dates and play in front of delirious crowds.

It was without counting on The Empress and her taste for challenge. Despite the multitude of constraints, the French pop group will soon perform around the world, from July 13 to 27. Concerts given illegally? No, because L'Impératrice does go on tour, but virtually.

Concerts accessible by geolocation

Concretely, what does it give? A three-stage video concert: the first part provided by a "local" group (Fils Cara will provide the French show), followed by a "common core", an acoustic session performed on the rooftops of Paris, and a concert live (but without audience), immortalized at La Cigale. All pre-recorded. “We do not hide at all that it is false direct, precisely the idea is to play with things that we cannot do normally. In an empty room for example, you can sing standing on the seats, in the pit… It offers new opportunities, ”explains Antoine Bisou, the group's manager and producer.

Mexico City, Los Angeles, Montreal, Paris, Istanbul… In total, the group will provide ten dates in ten different countries, accessible only through geolocation. It is therefore impossible to attend the Californian concert, when you live in Gif-sur-Yvette. Limited to 1,000 seats (9 euros per seat), each show will be broadcast live at a fixed time in streaming, for a unique performance. “The idea was to limit to make the event exclusive, it will not be rebroadcast. It’s not just a great Instagram live, ”said the producer, delighted to be among the first to embark on the virtual tour.

A unique experience

If the group brought its music to life thanks to small videos broadcast on social networks during confinement, the question of "after" quickly arose. Because of the coronavirus, the group had to revise their plans, mourn their sixty dates this year (including the very popular Coachella festival), and postpone the release of their new album at the start of 2021. "We couldn't stay to do nothing for months, you had to adapt, tell people "We are here, we are coming", "explains Charles de Boisseguin, one of the six musicians of L'Impératrice. Even a virtual tour seemed like a good alternative.

"Launching this is almost to give hope," says Antoine Bisou. OK there are no real dates at the moment, but we manage whatever happens to come to your house, offer you good music, a beautiful show. Like the production, the group sees this adventure as an exciting challenge, an opportunity to experiment, not a last resort. "We thought of a whole scene in order to create a somewhat unique experience," Charles de Boisseguin develops. We really worked on the quality, the image, the sound upstream, I will advise the spectators to settle down comfortably with friends, a few glasses, a good screen, as if they were watching a good film.
