Novartis has agreed to pay more than $ 642 million to end lawsuits it faces in the United States court system, where the Swiss pharmaceutical company is accused of paying large bribes to doctors , the US Department of Justice reported.

The first out-of-court agreement reached between the group and the justice system relates to Novartis taking over through three foundations of patients taking two of their drugs, Gilenya and Afinitor .

The second agreement refers to the accusation of the payment of bribes by the Swiss company to the doctors.

"Through this agreement and others, the government is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring that pharmaceutical companies do not use bribes to influence doctors and patients to prescribe and purchase certain medications," said Jody Hunt, deputy Justice Department, quoted in a statement.

Novartis agreed to pay more than 591 million to close the shares for the bribery plan. In this case, the group is accused of having spent hundreds of millions of dollars on tens of thousands of conference programs, which according to the US justice system were actually disguised means of "paying bribes" to doctors.

For example, the Justice Department says Novartis often chooses doctors as speakers who have already prescribed large amounts of their drugs in exchange for fees to encourage them to prescribe them. The medical visitors were in charge of putting pressure on the chosen speakers.

These methods have been reported throughout the pharmaceutical industry with some frequency. The bribery trials began after a 2011 complaint by Oswald Bilotta , who "will receive a reward the amount of which has yet to be determined," the statement said. As part of the negotiation, Novartis has entered into a 5-year good conduct agreement.
