Ethiopian universities plagued by ethnic tensions

12 dead and 35,000 students fleeing, Ethiopian public universities have been under high tension for several months. With the approach of the regional and legislative elections in August 2020, the situation could become tense.

Because it is, first of all, the political competition which penetrates the campuses of Ethiopia. 22 out of 45 were closed, for a time, according to the Ministry of Higher Education. To deal with this situation, repressive measures have been taken. Several hundred people, students, teachers, administrative staff, were suspended. Other initiatives are also in place to work on the phenomenon at the root and try to stem it.
