“Lupine III: The First” by Takashi Yamazaki - Eurozoom

  • The Champs-Elysées Film Festival and the Annecy Festival are open to the public in their online versions.
  • Launched a few days apart, they both offer content, free or paid, but accessible to everyone simultaneously.
  • "20 Minutes" spent the day on Monday on the two platforms, in order to compare the two offers.

When film festivals are reinvented, it is sometimes for the benefit of the general public. The Champs-Elysées Film Festival and the Annecy Festival, which both take place until June 30, have chosen to put their editions online and make them accessible to as many people as possible, by simply registering ( free) in the first case, an accreditation (paying, 15 euros for the entire duration of the festival) in the second.

"We didn't want to give up," explains Sophie Dulac, president and founder of the Champs-Elysées Film Festival at 20 Minutes . The adventure of an online festival will make our event better known throughout France. "Already 10,500 people have connected to the site of a festival which defends" the young creation of independent French and American cinema ".

"We could not fail to bring into existence the films and artists that count on us," insists Mickael Marin, president of the Annecy Festival. It only remains for the spectator to set off to discover a plethoric offer! We no longer know where to turn because there are so many things to discover in animation cinema around the world. You have to take a moment to sort it out. It is deserved !

Places limited or not

At the Champs-Elysées Film Festival, the number of seats is limited to each screening, but some films are not a big hit. It is enough to browse the site to discover that, for example, the excellent documentary 17 Blocks by David Rothbart, harsh chronicle of life in a district of Washington, is still visible. It will remain so until it has reached the 1,500 authorized virtual spectators.

In Annecy, some works are shown in their entirety but others - problem of rights obliges - are only revealed in extracts or in featurettes. Only the jury will be able to see entire films like Lupine III: The first by Takashi Yamakasi or Petit vampire by Joann Sfar. Five feature films from the Official Competition and six from the Contrechamp section are made available to the accredited public.

Lessons and meetings

At the Champs-Elysées Film Festival, Stephen Frears and Edgar Wright answered present and their cinema lessons are always available in replay and subtitled. The show cases of different artists are also easily found on the site. As for the prize list, it is announced for June 16 from 8 p.m. with a nice surprise promised by the organizers.

In Annecy, the prize list takes place in two stages: June 19 for special prices and June 20 for other prices. For the rest of the event, it cannot be overly recommended to establish a precise program. Because, between long and short films, cinema lessons, subtitled “work in progress” and webminars, the two weeks of festival will not be enough to see everything.

Sites to explore

The Champs-Elysées Film Festival site is a model of clarity. Intuitive at will, just click to find your happiness. We will be honest, that of Annecy requires more effort, but the game is worth the effort. It's just a habit to get used to. Just click at the top right on the "program" tab and then on "view content" so that a world of wonders opens up before you. We wish you good walks and great discoveries.
