Will the cost of living soar in the weeks and months to come? The very first inflation indicators for the month of April are not very reassuring. It is the "gariguette" effect with the "wipe" effect.

Yet at first glance, everything is fine. Inflation in France for the month of April: + 0.4% over one year, Insee figure. But if we look behind this appearance of stability, it is bubbling, with considerable price differences. All that is energy for example, fuel, petrol, diesel. Prices fell there. - 8.5% in April. And even - 10% at European level. On the other hand. Fresh products: + 18%. We've all seen it in supermarkets. This is called the "gariguette" effect. As there was no cheap Spanish strawberry, we had to buy French strawberry, very good, but twice as expensive. It has not been seen in the general price index ... because it has been said ... the fall in fuel prices has offset the rise in prices of fresh products. But, it might not last.

Should we fear a general rise in prices?

Yes, Unfortunately… that's it, fuel prices are starting to go up. You have seen that in China, oil consumption is even higher than it was a year ago. Besides, the Goal prices went up to 32 dollars. So yes, the good news on the gas side is over. On the other hand, in everyday life, in addition to the “gariguette” effect, we are now going to undergo the “wipe” effect. This means that all sanitary measures: Clean workstations, limit the number of customers in a store, in a restaurant… .all of these measures increase costs… by 10 to 20% more, according to Medef's calculations. So, inevitably, it will be found in the consumer's final score. So yes, unfortunately… we can fear price increases. It remains to be seen whether the consumer will have the means. This is there, THE key question ... Because: When the supply does not meet the demand, because the supply is too expensive, and households have become poorer ... It's called "the crisis", with numerous bankruptcies. And that is, unfortunately, the scenario before us.
