  • Founded less than a year ago, the Île de Groix brewery received a silver medal awarded during the international competition in Lyon.
  • Ambitious, the owner of the brewery suffered the coronavirus crisis and the closure of cafes and restaurants.
  • The cancellation of cultural events is also a brake on the development of the activity.

She has not yet celebrated her first birthday as she already has a trophy on her record. Born in June in the spirit of the former boss of the Kronenbourg brewery in Rennes, Groix beer discreetly celebrated its "title". Engaged in the international competition of Lyon, the island brewery of Morbihan received a silver medal for its amber pepper beer. "A great pride" for the founder Jean-Pierre Rennaud, who saw his "GX" stand out among the 1,300 beers entered. “It is important to be recognized by your peers. The brewery is not even a year old and we already have the recognition that we are producing well ”, rejoices the owner.

Falling in love with the island more than fifteen years ago, the man who worked for Danone for a long time decided to create a beer production unit there with a double objective: to save the fields and create jobs. Less than a year after its creation, the objective seems to have been achieved.

Since its launch, the Groisillonne brewery has sold 30,000 liters of its amber and blonde. The second vintage promises to be more delicate. Driven, like everyone else, by the coronavirus epidemic, the company has seen its biggest customers close: cafes and restaurants are shut down, festivals and cultural events all canceled. “An event like the Lorient interceltic festival was 100 to 150 drums ordered. We will have to compensate ”.

Factory closed for three weeks

To try to find new distribution channels, the owner of the brewery took the boat to reach the continent and try to offer his beer to the people of the continent. At the wine merchants or in the supermarket, the welcome was warm. "But we will have to sell bottles," quips Jean-Pierre Rennaud. His goal of producing 80,000 liters for his second vintage looks difficult, especially since his factory, which employs five people, closed for three weeks during confinement. The boss is already planning to launch a white beer and other specialties to diversify.

Dependent on the tourist frequentation of his small island, Jean-Pierre Rennaud waits to know when the bistros of Groix can reopen. Edouard Philippe evoked the date of June 2 if the epidemic did not start again in arrow. "If we have a decent summer, we can save ourselves." What if it isn't? "Then we will be in great difficulty".
