  • Clinics are currently not too busy to deal with the coronavirus epidemic.
  • At the CHP Saint-Grégoire near Rennes, the beds fitted out to accommodate patients are empty.
  • But the establishment is ready to participate in the war effort in the event of saturation of the Rennes University Hospital.

With 993 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 43 deaths, Brittany remains relatively untouched by the epidemic for the time being. But authorities expect to face an influx of patients in the coming days with an epidemic wave that could occur during the first week of April. In the meantime, healthcare establishments in the region are preparing, like the Saint-Grégoire private hospital center (CHP) north of Rennes.

Ranked best clinic in France for nine years by Le Point magazine, before being robbed first place last year, the establishment is currently idling. For the past two weeks, all non-emergency operations have been deprogrammed there and only the emergency rooms, maternity, palliative care and chemotherapy services continue to function normally. "The activity was reduced by five with less than forty interventions in the operating room every day against 200 usually," confirms Ronan Dubois, director general of CHP Saint-Grégoire.

Fifty beds are empty for the moment

If the clinic is not on the front line in the fight against the Covid-19, it is nevertheless "the weapon with the foot" to take part in the war effort. On the third floor of the establishment, a fifty-bed unit has been installed to receive patients. "Critical cases are transferred to the Pontchaillou CHU in Rennes," explains the director. We intervene in the second curtain to relieve the CHU in case of saturation of its resuscitation service ”.

But unlike the Grand Est region or Ile-de-France, the influx of patients is not yet as large in Rennes and Brittany. So that the beds supposed to accommodate patients with coronavirus are empty at the CHP Saint-Grégoire. This situation may seem incongruous given the state of health emergency. "It can be uncomfortable to see empty private hospitals," admits Ronan Dubois. But everyone is in their role, in accordance with the missions entrusted to us by the Regional Health Agency ”.

Solidarity is organized between clinics

While waiting to be contacted by the health authorities, solidarity is being organized at the CHP Saint-Grégoire. A dozen of his caregivers as well as two anesthesiologists have just joined the Europe clinic in Port-Marly in the Yvelines, an establishment belonging to the same Vivalto Santé group.

A dozen resuscitation beds equipped with respirators have also taken the direction of the Paris region in recent days. A means like any other for the private hospitals to take part in the war effort, them which had deplored a few days ago not to be more solicited.
