Some might think that curry powder is made logically from curry leaves. But really, curry powder doesn't contain curry leaves at all!

Curry powder is simply a mixture of different flavors commonly used in Indian cuisine. The distinctive color of this mixture comes from yellow turmeric powder. Among the main ingredients are coriander, cumin, green and black cardamom, fenugreek, black pepper and hot pepper (Chile).

According to German nutritionists, curry powder can contain anything between 6 and 30 ingredients, but curry leaves are never among them.

So there is no wonder that curry powders are so different. Experts advise buying small quantities because spices lose their fragrance quickly.

Experts say storing it in a cool, dark place helps preserve its taste for about half a year. When cooking with curry powder, it should be fried in a little oil, which helps to get out the full flavor. But be careful not to burn the mixture as it will start to become pungent.
