A 20-year-old Russian man was killed by a smartphone charger, who was not well insulated when he connected to electricity in the city of Yoshkar.

Kirill Matviyev, who works as a car mechanic, appears to have been subjected to an electric shock that led to his death, while his fiancée Mira Policina was seriously injured by the electric shock in the accident that occurred mid last week.

Despite the efforts made by his fiancée to help him breathe and call an ambulance home, the paramedics were unable to save him.

Police suspect that the electrical cable of the phone charger was not well insulated, but said an investigation was still underway.

The commission investigating the "Mary El" Republic, one of the Volga Basin republics of the Russian Federation, said the possible cause of the accident was "problems with the insulation of the charger wires."

A spokesman for the committee said that Kirill "put the smartphone in the electrical socket for charging, but he was given an electric shock, as well as his fiancée," adding that "the young man died at the scene of the accident."

A video posted by his girlfriend, Policina, showed them both, and his friends released another video of the young man, who was apparently popular with the townspeople.
