Jane Fonda caused a sensation at the Oscars when she arrived on stage in a bright red Elie Saab Couture dress… an outfit she had already worn in 2014 at the Cannes Film Festival. To present the Oscar for Best Film (won by Bong Joon-ho for Parasite ), she also held on to her shoulder the red coat that she wears every Friday to demonstrate in front of the Capitol against climate change.

This is also where his desire to recycle his outfits comes from, even that of the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony.

The importance of the message

"Do you see that coat? I needed something red, and I went out to buy this coat on sale. It's the last item of clothing I buy. When I tell people that we don't need to shop, that we don't need more, I have to follow the same path. So I will not buy clothes anymore, "she had chanted in front of the Capitol, as W magazine recalls.

Jane Fonda is not the first, during this award season, to recycle what she has already worn on the red carpet. Joaquin Phoenix promised to wear the same tuxedo this year and kept it. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has long since got into the habit of putting on the same outfit several times during her outings and the Alexander McQueen dress she wore at the BAFTA is only the latest example in dated.

Some may cry hypocrisy, most of the clothes worn by the stars on the red carpets are indeed lent to them and their carbon footprint often leaves something to be desired. However, showing yourself several times in the same outfit at events of international significance has at least the merit of getting the message across.
