Tina Turner has passed away at the age of 83. She rose to fame in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the band Ike & Turner Revue.

Turner paved the way for black women's place on the big stages, says music critic Per Sinding-Larsen. "Her legacy is all around us, look at Beyonce and Rihanna or Janet Jackson," he says. "The voice was like an engine that never needed to be oiled," says Culture News music critic Tali da Silva.
