The National Urban Greening Festival is held every year by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It aims to promote the development of a city with lush greenery.
The ceremony was attended by about 200 people, including officials from Miyagi Prefecture and Sendai City. Six elementary school students pledged to "protect and nurture irreplaceable greenery and connect it to the future from here in Sendai, the city of trees" Ms. Yoshiko also visited the Aobayama Park memorial district, which is one of the main venues of the festival.
