Norwegian company Telenor has put what it claims is the southernmost commercial mobile phone base station in the world into operation in Antarctica. It is the first time that regular mobile phone services have been offered there.

The new 4G service covers the remote “Troll’ research station and its surroundings. Research is carried out here all year round, including on climate change and its effects on the eternal ice. The network will enable scientists to collect and upload data in real time via Internet of Things devices.
