Cell phone reception here, in this area? This has been possible since the beginning of February.

The Norwegian company Telenor has put what it claims is the southernmost commercial mobile phone base station in the world into operation in Antarctica. It is the first time that regular mobile phone services have been offered there.

But why is a mobile network needed in Antarctica? The new 4G service covers the remote “Troll” research station and its surroundings. According to Telenor, this will increase the security of scientists and enable them to collect and upload data in real time via Internet of Things devices.

Mobile technology is the same as everywhere else. Nevertheless, special precautions were taken to protect the devices from strong winds and low temperatures.

The “Troll” research station belongs to the Norwegian Polar Institute. Research is carried out here all year round, including on climate change and its effects on the eternal ice.
