A 35-year-old man was killed in a police operation in Ingolstadt, Upper Bavaria, on Monday. The man had been in an "exceptional psychological situation" and attacked the forces "abruptly", said the police headquarters.

They then took up arms and fired. Despite immediate medical treatment, the man died shortly afterwards in hospital from his injuries, it said.Further investigations to clarify the course of events and the circumstances of the shooting are being conducted by the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation.
