A 35-year-old man was killed in a police operation in Ingolstadt, Upper Bavaria, on Monday. The man had been in an "exceptional psychological situation" and attacked the forces "abruptly", said the police headquarters of Upper Bavaria North. They then took up arms and fired.

Despite immediate medical treatment, the man died shortly afterwards in hospital from his injuries, it said. According to the information, the emergency services had been alerted on Monday morning because of the man and had found him shortly afterwards south of the refinery in Ingolstadt.

LKA investigates

The police forces had tried for several hours and with the participation of special forces and a negotiating group to persuade the man for medical treatment. Then the 35-year-old attacked.

Further investigations to clarify the course of events and the circumstances of the shooting are being conducted by the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation under the direction of the Ingolstadt public prosecutor's office.
