Kenneth Anger was one of Hollywood's first openly gay filmmakers. He made films with eroticism and homosexual themes when homosexuality was still banned in the United States.

He is also said to be the father of "jump cuten" – that is, when you abruptly jump from one image to another – and for using pop as a soundtrack in his films. He became best known for the gossip book "Hollywood Babylon", published in 1959. In it, he detailed scandals involving the biggest stars of the time, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Charlie Chaplin.
