Bougainvillea is in bloom along the waterway leading to Hinagu Port in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The best time to see the flowers is likely to continue until the beginning of next month, says local resident Takayoshi Yoshida.
The city-owned land used to be overgrown with weeds, but 17 years ago, Mr. Yoshida obtained the approval of the city and cut the weeds by himself and then planted bougainsvillea little by little.
