Baldwin's lawyers asked for manslaughter charges against him to be dropped. The artist's lawyers argue that these charges represent an abuse of the system and insult an innocent person "whose rights have been violated to the extreme" Baldwin was first officially charged with manslaughter in January 2023, but was dropped in April.
In January 2024, after the investigation was resumed, charges were brought again. Previously, the court also found Project Rust gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of the death of Galina Hutchins.
