Sakurajima daikon radish was once recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's heaviest radish. Contest was held in seven divisions, including the weight division, the general division in which students competed on beauty.

A radish with a weight of 18.6 kg and a girth of 1 meter 12 cm, submitted by Manabu Ohno, a farmer in Sakurajama, won the overall prize. Wataru Uraguchi, a fourth-year student at Kurokami Elementary School won the school category with a radish weighing 22.5 kg.
