A contest was held in Sakurajima, Kagoshima City to compete for the weight and shape of ``Sakurajima Daikon,'' which can weigh over 30 kilograms.

Sakurajima daikon radish was once recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's heaviest radish, with some being heavier than 30 kg.



On the 27th, a total of 56 Sakurajima daikon radish were entered from Kagoshima prefecture, Chiba prefecture, etc. to the contest held at the roadside station in Sakurajima.



The contest

was held in seven divisions, including the


weight division,


the general division in which students competed on beauty, and the school division


in which they competed in the weight of the radish grown by each school.

In the general category, the judges looked at the shape and color, as well as the thickness of the girth and the overall balance by pounding the radish to make sure there were no cavities.




As a result, a radish with a weight of 18.6 kg and a girth of 1 meter 12 cm, submitted by Manabu Ohno, a farmer in Sakurajima, won the overall prize.



Mr. Ohno said, ``I tried my best to make something better than anyone else.It might have been a good idea to use fallen leaves as fertilizer.''

Wataru Uraguchi, a fourth-year student at Kurokami Elementary School in Sakurajima, won the school category with a radish weighing 22.5 kg. ``I grew it because I wanted it to grow big enough to be eaten by people all over the world.'' I was talking.
