Bahn uses 3,700 IT systems – expensive technical sprawl. Operation, maintenance and advice on all of these systems would have cost the state-owned company 1.5 billion euros last year alone.

Insiders report a mid-three-digit million amount. According to the report, high-ranking rail insiders speak of an “IT chaos” that runs through all subsidiaries. At the subsidiary DB-Cargo, for example, exactly 557 IT applications were in use in 2023. Annual costs: 254.4 million euros.
