Deutsche Bahn is apparently struggling with significant costs for IT systems.

This is reported by the “Business Insider” portal, citing insiders.

The group therefore maintains around 3,700 different IT systems.

According to confidential documents, these are hardly compatible with each other.

Operation, maintenance and advice on all of these systems would have cost the state-owned company 1.5 billion euros last year alone.

A large part is said to have gone to external consultants.

Insiders report a mid-three-digit million amount.

According to the report, high-ranking rail insiders speak of an “IT chaos” that runs through all subsidiaries.

At the subsidiary DB-Cargo, for example, exactly 557 IT applications were in use in 2023.

Annual costs: 254.4 million euros.

Operational management and maintenance alone would have cost 69 million euros.

The railway board is talking about outdated, inconsistent “do-it-yourself IT”.

There are plans to reduce the number of IT systems and transfer them to a common platform;

However, managers had doubts about the implementation and speed of this project, it said.

When contacted by Business Insider, the company did not comment on the information.

"We ask for your understanding that we generally do not comment on individual contractual relationships and costs," said a spokeswoman.
