Fiat Tipo Cross -

DR

Quite discreet in our country since its launch in 2016, the Fiat Tipo nevertheless has many qualities.

Starting with its attractive price / performance ratio, which is between low cost models and "normal" cars.

Then come its very good habitability, and its rather pleasant Latin look.

On the occasion of its 5th year on the market, the Fiat has just been aesthetically refreshed (modified front end, cosmetic details, etc.) and is offering a new reorganization of its range in order to attract a younger audience.

Now all of its body variants (4-door, 5-door and station wagon) are available in Tipo, Life finishes and the 5-door sedan has a new Cross version which we will be looking at today.

With the latter, the Italian manufacturer takes advantage of the craze for SUVs / crossovers by giving it an adventurous look.

This facelift also extends to the passenger compartment which, on certain versions, receives a 7 '' digital speedometer unit associated with the Uconnect 5 multimedia system, equipped with a 10.25 '' touch screen introduced by the new Fiat 500. Placed on top of the dashboard like a tablet, it appears very clear and its operation is particularly intuitive.

Among the novelties, we can also mention the steering wheel which has been redesigned, as well as the air conditioning controls, as well as the trim which has been renewed.

Even if we can still regret the presence of hard plastics, the interior of the Tipo has been significantly refreshed, which allows it to erase its age.

New start

What does not change on this Fiat is its great roominess both at the front and at the rear, where the legroom is particularly abundant.

Family while maintaining reasonable exterior dimensions (4.38 m long for its 5-door version), it also benefits from a generous trunk.

The latter has a capacity of 440 liters which can reach 1,540 liters when the rear seat is folded down.

Very interesting values for this segment.

On the occasion of this spring refresh, the Tipo receives a brand new petrol engine from the FireFly family: it is a 1.0 block, 3 cylinders, developing 100 hp.

This advantageously replaces the old 4-cylinder 1.4 strong 95 hp.

The special thing about the new "3-legged" is that its maximum torque of 190 Nm is already available at 1,500 rpm, thanks to which there is no need to wring out the tachometer to get the most out of it.

Very well soundproofed, this small engine has a pleasant fishing in town.

Very flexible, it does not balk at the task and is much more pleasant to use than the one it replaces.

It is also much less greedy: announced mixed consumption of 5.5 l / 100 km.

On the motorway, it is less nervous on the other hand, but it offers the advantage of remaining very discreet despite a manual gearbox with only 5 speeds.

In short, after this passage through the updated box, the Tipo remains what it is: a car without frills, honest, ready to render many years of service to a thrifty family.

A good rational purchase.
