news of the day

Despite a warming trend, there is still water in the gas.

In particular about the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia and Germany and is still awaiting certification.

The German chancellor assured a group of US senators that the pipeline "would not go ahead" if Russia invaded Ukraine.

A difficult decision when more than 55% of German gas imports come from Russia, a figure up 15 points since 2012.

On the Russian side, transporting 55 billion cubic meters of gas to Germany would represent a significant financial windfall.

In order to better understand the strategic issues, our journalist Marie de Fournas brilliantly looked at the implications of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in light of the Ukrainian conflict.

Germany's gas reserves have fallen to a "worrying" level, below the critical threshold of 40%, the government announced on Wednesday.

The question of whether gas reserves will be sufficient to survive the winter in Germany has been in the headlines for several weeks, as the standoff over Ukraine between Russia, Europe and the United States.

More than 55% of German gas imports come from Russia, a figure up 15 points since 2012, when deliveries to Europe have become a pressure tool for Vladimir Putin.

Trend of the day

The hope of avoiding a war in Ukraine grew on Wednesday after the intense diplomatic activity of recent days, which offers "real chances" of de-escalation according to Kiev, the Kremlin like the West noting first positive signals "Today there there are real chances for a diplomatic settlement”, welcomed in Kiev the head of Ukrainian diplomacy Dmytro Kouleba, for whom the situation remains “tense but under control”.

The threats of “unprecedented” sanctions in the event of an attack on Ukraine by Russia, as well as the dialogue carried out in recent days could remove the specter of a war in Europe, wants to believe the Ukrainian government.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also showed optimism by hailing Wednesday the "progress" born of the resumption of intense diplomatic exchanges between Russia and the West.
